I don't think government should be in the business of telling us what to eat.  Look at what that got us.

  • An Open Letter To Chase About Their Big Charity Transparency Fail

    Hi Nathaniel,

For the social sector to be a powerful engine of positive change in society, we must reward those who can produce real outcome.

Corporate philanthropy, for the most part, does not care that much about outcome, since it's usually managed by marketing departments and marketing departments tend to care mostly about reputation management.

If the major funders of social change do not tie their investments to real outcome, this sector will (continue to) be "misaligned" and when you have a misaligned sector, you will not attract or retain the best talent, which the sector desperately needs.

So yes, I'm willing to consider eliminating corporate philanthropy all together. Retire this tax shelter completely.  In its place, I'd like to see us offer incentives for corporations to invest in social enterprises that produce modest financial return... similar to Acumen's "patient capital."

Unfortunately, having a leaderboard and transparency does nothing to change the fact this is a meaningless popularity contest aimed at building Chase's brand.

    >>What we really need to do is re-define success as sustainability. If my generation can grow up with a new way of thinking, we will be making laws and inventing technologies and starting businesses with a new value system that is naturally "environmentally sustainable."

You are so right about the daunting challenge ahead of us.  I'm confident creative young minds like your own can find ways to get us there.

Zack, vegans live longer (on average) than vegetarians or omnivores.  Does that make you reconsider?

Same with Gandhi.  Everyone looks up to him and quotes him but we often neglect the one cause dearest to him throughout his entire life - vegetarianism.
