ISO National Community Educator!

(New York City) Lambda Legal is the nation's oldest and largest legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people living with HIV. Lambda Legal achieves its mission through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Lambda Legal's civil rights work encompasses a wide range of areas, including but not limited to: federal and state constitutional law; discrimination in employment, benefits, housing, insurance and schools; antigay harassment and violence; LGBTQ youth issues; parental rights and adoption; and access to education, health care and HIV-related treatments.

The National Community Educator is a member of the Community Education and Advocacy Team in the Education and Public Affairs Department. The primary functions of the Community Education and Advocacy Team are to increase support for Lambda Legal's impact litigation and LGBT rights, and to influence policy by engaging the LGBT/HIV communities and allies through education and advocacy programs and campaigns. 

Responsibilities

The National Community Educator:

oversees the Community Education team as it increases the general visibility of Lambda Legal throughout the country at Pride celebrations, conferences and other public/speaking engagements. This includes working with other staff to create a master list of events, developing training and education proposals and curricula that can be used by all staff, and helping to oversee Lambda Legal's participation in public events across the country. The National Community educator will act as both lead staff person and assistant to other staff members. This position involves a significant amount of domestic travel;

helps to coordinate and implement national education and advocacy campaigns that amplify and support our legal work by engaging and supporting organizations and individuals across the country. These campaigns seek to employ effective and creative strategies to shape public opinion, influence policy makers, educate individuals and mobilize people to take action to exercise and expand the rights of LGBT people and people living with HIV around a particular issue;

builds and develops relationships with key partner organizations in strategic locations and/or around defined issue areas, and identify and implement joint projects;

helps to conceptualize and plan Lambda Legal's electronic communications and web 2.0 strategies for Community Education and Advocacy events and projects;

works with regional staff to maintain an adequate supply of publications and other materials in all of Lambda Legal's offices and to identify additional resources that may need to be produced;

manages the day-to-day general visibility activities for the HDQ region (ME, VT, NH, MA, NY, PA, RI, CT, NJ, MD) including coordinating Pride and conference participation and responding to requests for speakers and educational materials;

recruits, trains, supervises and supports volunteers and interns for the HDQ region.  

The National Community Educator reports to the Community Education and Advocacy Director and works in close collaboration with other members of the Community Education Team.

Qualifications

The candidate must have:

at least 5 years of implementing campaigns and/or educational programs;

experience developing training curricula and facilitating trainings, preferably using a popular education model;

proven ability to build collaborative relationships with partners;

excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be well-organized and detail-oriented;

extensive experience training, supervising and developing staff and volunteers and developing a volunteer program;

good knowledge of LGBT and HIV issues and communities, preferably on a national level;

have a driver's license (access to a car is highly desired);

the ability and willingness to travel extensively nationwide.

Additional experience developing web-based campaigns is a plus.
