Lambda Legal is finishing 2008 on a high note. We argued our landmark marriage case Varnum v. Brien before the Iowa Supreme Court just this week. Despite the disappointing passage of Prop 8, we are working with NCLR, the ACLU and others to preserve the CA Supreme Court ruling we won in May.

Our victories this year include a successful challenge to a ballot measure in Maryland that threatened to overturn a new ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression. We defended lesbian and gay high school students in New Jersey and California, making their schools accountable for not protecting them against antigay harassment. And the U.S. Department of State finally dropped its ban on employing people with HIV as foreign service officers.

We are ready for the opportunities and challenges ahead in 2009, and are proud of our victories and the impact of our work in 2008.
