Mission
“To support and advocate for the needs and rights of children who are affected by natural and man-made catastrophes in Uganda. Joy for Children Uganda strives to increase the resources available to implement and strengthen the capacity of families and communities to care for children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS, poverty and conflict.”
VISION
“A society devoid of Children’s rights violation, where all the children have equal opportunity to maximize their potential.”
Programs
Joy for Children Resource Centre
We have established Joy Children’s Resource Centre, where children gather for basic education in drawing/art, computer use, games, music, dance, drama, hygiene training, and educational video shows. The Resource Centre entirely depends on Youth Volunteers from nearby High Schools and Colleges, who take care of the children’s needs every Saturday. We also collaborate with Primary School teachers in the training of children with basic literacy and arithmetic skills.
Advocacy/Anti-child abuse campaign
Statistics show that millions of children in Uganda are subjected to child abuse. They are defiled/molested, denied education, health services, or recruited as child labourers that account for about 2.7 million children. Others are beaten, bruised, burned, starved, raped, abducted and recruited as child soldiers in conflict zones. The above scenarios have led to large numbers of children dropping out of school, getting physically maimed or deformed, at times resulting into death. Joy for Children Uganda came up with an Anti-child Abuse Campaign, aimed at sensitizing the children, parents and the community on the best child care practices. We raise awareness about the needs and potential of children in poverty or conflict situations, while advocating for the strengthening and enforcement of existing laws for the protection of the rights of children in Uganda. We challenge policy makers and development partners to become more actively involved in protecting the rights and welfare of children. Under this programme, Joy for Children Uganda organises a Children’s Week in each of the four major regions of the country to further strengthen its activities, and to recruit more supporters into the child advocacy campaign.
Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
This programme aims at campaigning and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, malaria, T.B and major preventable child illnesses. The programme integrates the at-risk population sections such as the youth and women in rural and urban-poor areas. These two categories are very close to children in their daily lives, either as older siblings, or as mothers and/or female caregivers to vulnerable children. It is important that these groups take part in the main programs of Joy for Children Uganda.According to UN reports, “2.5 billion People worldwide do not have access to the simplest form of toilet.” Still, many more live in poor sanitation, comprised of poor garbage disposal, poor drainage, and poor use of available latrines. Joy for Children Uganda advocates for improvement of sanitation by policy-makers, while also practically helping the neediest sections of the population put up simple latrines to save the children from preventable diseases like cholera, worms, dysentery and diarrhoea.
Food Security
This program integrates activities and strategies that assist families to improve food and nutrition in their families. The target group comprises of very low-income slum-dwelling families that have young children.
