General Questions:

How do you process nonprofit donations?

All donations to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax status made through Change.org are processed by our partner, Network for Good.

What is Network for Good?

Network for Good, a nonprofit organization, was founded by a consortium of leaders from the Internet and nonprofit sectors. It seeks to increase consumers' engagement by making it easier to get involved in their communities, by donating, volunteering, and getting involved with issues they care about. At the same time, Network for Good helps other nonprofits to enhance their effectiveness through increased reach, educational content, and tools.

When will the nonprofit receive my donation?

Network for Good disburses donations on the 15th of each month and includes all donations made in the previous month. For example, all donations made in January are disbursed on February 15th, and all donations made in February are disbursed on March 15.

Donations processed by Change.org for 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(5) organizations follow a similar disbursement schedule.

Why should I give online?

Contributions via the Internet are one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways for nonprofits to receive donations; they are less expensive than both checks by mail and credit card contributions made over the phone.

How do I know my transaction is secure?

Change.org and Network for Good use industry-leading Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to keep your personal information as secure as possible. Network for Good helps to protect your information by working with partners that provide a secure and safe environment for credit card donations.

Is my charitable donation 100% tax deductible?

All donations to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax status made through Change.org are 100% tax deductible. Tax donation receipts are sent by our partner, Network for Good. You do not need an additional receipt from the nonprofit that ultimately receives your donation.

Organizations with 501(c)(4) or other tax codes are public welfare organizations often involved in political activity. Because of this, donations to these organizations are not tax deductible.

Do you process donations for 501(c)(4) organizations?

Yes. Although our partner, Network for Good, only processes donations for 501(c)(3) organizations, we have received widespread interest from 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(5) organizations and their donors for a presence on Change.org, and as such we recently began processing donations for these organizations ourselves. (For a description of the difference between (c)(3), (c)(4), and (c)(5) organizations, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501(c)).

The fee structure for donations to 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(5) donations is the same as those processed by Network for Good - 4.75% of each donation is deducted for credit card and check processing. Note: In accordance with federal law, donations to 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(5) organizations are not tax deductible.

What about my privacy?

Change.org and Network for Good respect and protect your privacy. We will never sell, trade or rent your personal information to other individuals or companies. The information that you provide is used only to complete your donation. With your permission, your name and contact information will be provided to the nonprofit you supported through Change.org. If you do not wish share your name and contact information with the organization you supported, or you choose to make your donation anonymously, we will not share you name or contact information.

Are there fees when I donate through Change.org?

Yes. Our donation processing partner, Network for Good, charges a 4.75% tax-deductible fee for credit card transactions. This fee is used to pay banks, credit card companies and other administrative costs. Neither Change.org nor Network for Good profit from these fees.

Why shouldn't I just give directly to a nonprofit and avoid paying fees?

Contributing directly to an organization does not mean that you avoid paying processing fees. Even nonprofits themselves incur credit card or check processing fees when accepting your gift that are generally equal to or greater than the processing fees charged by our partner, Network for Good.

As a point of comparison, when you write a check to a nonprofit in response to a solicitation by mail, an average of 30 - 40% of the money you give goes toward paying for the piece of mail you were sent as well as all other pieces of mail that were not responded to.

I had a problem processing my donation, how can I get assistance?

If you have questions about why a donation attempt was unsuccessful, or if you have questions about a completed donation, please email us at help@change.org.

How do nonprofits get listed on Change.org?

The list of over 1 million nonprofits on Change.org is provided by our partner, GuideStar. GuideStar is the industry leader in collecting data about nonprofit organizations, which it obtains through annual IRS tax filings and through its direct communication with tens of thousands of organizations each year. GuideStar's database includes almost every registered 501(c)(3) organization in the United States, but does not include some of the most recently registered organizations. If you cannot find the nonprofit you are looking for, feel free to email us at nonprofits@change.org and suggest that we add it to our database. If you are a nonprofit that would like to appear on Change.org and are not already listed, please sign up here.

Questions about Political Donations:

How do you process political donations?

All political donations are processed by Change.org, Inc. In processing donations, Change.org, Inc acts as an agent of the donor and exercises no influence over the direction of the funds. Donations are held in escrow and mailed to candidates within 10 days of the contribution.

Is my political donation tax deductible?

No. Donations to political campaigns are not tax deductible.

What is your service fee for politicians?

Change.org charges a transaction fee of 1% for each political donation addition to the credit card processing fee charged by our partner CardServices, which amount to 3.5%.

So, if you give $10 to a candidate through Change.org, here's where the money goes:

$0.10 to Change.org
$0.35 to CardServices (credit card processor)
$9.55 to your candidate of choice

Because we serve as an agent of the donor, the 4.5% of each donation which is taken for processing does not count against the donor's per-cycle contribution limits. So for the purpose of political contribution limits, only $9.55 of a $10 contribution counts against the limitations.

What politicians can I donate to?

Donations may be made to any candidate for the US House of Representatives or Senate or any candidates for President. Users can also donate against any sitting elected official by contributing to the general election fund of the future nominee of the opposing party. For example, users who want to unseat or lobby against Republican Congressperson X can donate to a fund that will be given to the person nominated to be that congressperson's Democratic challenger the next primary campaign. Contributions are placed in escrow and will be distributed to each nominee within 10 days of their nomination. (In the very unusual event that no nominee is selected, the funds are transferred to each party's respective campaign committee; funds for Senatorial nominees go to either the e Democratic or Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee and House general funds go to the DCCC.) For the purposes of contribution limits, a contribution to one of these accounts is treated like any other individual contribution to the candidate.

Questions from Nonprofits:

How can I update my organization's information on Change.org?

All nonprofits can register for a free administrator account by going to www.change.org/nonprofit_signup, regardless of whether your organization already appears on Change.org. Admin accounts enable nonprofits to set up and edit their organization's profile information, track donations, post fundraising projects and events, and directly communicate with their network of supporters on Change.org.

If you have any questions about setting up your admin account, contact our community manager, Heather Mansfield, at heather [at] change.org.

Do we need to send donors a tax receipt?

No. Tax donation receipts are sent by Change.org. You do not need to send an additional receipt.

When will I receive my donations?

Network for Good disburses donations on the 15th of each month and includes all donations made in the previous month. For example, all donations made in January are disbursed on February 15th, and all donations made in February are disbursed on March 15.

Donations processed by Change.org for 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(5) organizations follow a similar disbursement schedule.

How do we change our organization's address?

Your address has been provided by GuideStar, which in turn obtained it through your annual IRS tax filing or through direct communication with your organization. If this address is incorrect, go to http://www.guidestar.org/npo/index.jsp and register your organization with GuideStar. Once you have registered and logged in as your organization's GuideStar contact, you will find instructions for updating your listing.
