The 'federal marriage amendment' i would support would state that 'a civil marriage shall be between two persons over the age of consent and no closer related by blood than third cousin.' This would allow churches to continue to deny 'holy matrimony' to anyone they feel the need to discriminate against, but give all people, straight and gay, the exact same marriage rights under federal law. in a secular country, this is the only fair way to handle marriage, which is basically a legal contract. any gay folks who feel the need of a church blessing of their union can find plenty of churches who truly practice what Jesus taught and will happily accommodate them.  i go to one myself. We left 'separate but equal' behind a long time ago when it came to civil rights for African-Americans, it's time we do the same for our gay brothers and sisters. Banning gay marriage makes about as much sense as banning left-handed scissors! - by Kathy Warren
