Begin in your homes, your neighborhoods, your schools, heck even in the prisons! Animal abuses need to be exposed and prosecuted to the highest extent. These people are callous and seemingly ignorant of the abuses they inflict. Start with your children or any children you are around. Talk about these issues. Teach others how to treat animals well and explain why they deserve a good life just as much as we humans do. Do not tolerate an ounce of animal abuse in your home (and yes, letting your child hit, kick, pull on tails and tease is abuse) or in homes you are in.
I know this may seem like a slight suggestion to this gigantic issue with so many atrocities happening, but along with criminal prosecution, we must also change something in the minds of these creeps. It was the cardinal rule in my childhood home to treat all animals with care, respect and most of all, absolute love and compassion and it is not because it was "forced" on me, I believe it is because I came to understand that they are feeling beings as well, just like me, who hurt when abused, who feel and care and most of all who LOVE!
