Provide relief for families of immigrants

Millions of undocumented immigrants reside in the U.S. Every year thousands of them enter into a family relationship with an American, often through marriage.

Contrary to what many believe, when an undocumented immigrant marries a U.S. citizen, the path to legalization is long, and in some cases, impossible. In the past year, thousands of  families have been separated due to the increase in workplace raids.

Other families must send their immigrant relatives abroad to obtain a visa to re-enter through a foreign consulate. Usually because of unlawful presence, the immigrant must wait while the government reviews whether the U.S. citizen spouse will suffer extreme hardship if that immigrant is not allowed to return.

If the family fails to prove "enough" hardship, the immigrant is  barred from entering the U.S. for ten years. This is not only unduly burdensome to the couple, but separates parents from their children and causes extreme financial hardship.

In the immigration world, the sins of one's family may come back to haunt them. A 15-year-old whose parents send him across the border with a birth certificate of a U.S. citizen cousin will never have the opportunity to re-enter the U.S. legally.

A one-year-old infant brought to the U.S. illegally will still have to  return to her home country even 20 years later, waiting for the U.S. government to decide if her husband will suffer sufficiently without her.

We need laws that provide justice and compassion. We need immigration policy that supports, rather than divides, American families.

Please work on a bill that allows relatives of U.S. citizens to adjust their status in the U.S., or eliminate the unlawful presence bars that prevent family reunification. Stop the raids that relentlessly separate families. Finally, bring the undocumented population out of the shadows with a fair and reasonable reform that allows them to work toward lawful status in the U.S.

Thank you Laura for brining to light the hardships that we all face. I personally am torn now because I face whether or not to return to Mexico with my husband (he is currently being detained waiting for INS) or staying here in the U.S. If I go, then I leave a US citizen child here without a mother and if I stay then I allow my other US citizen child to grow up without a father. How is a mother supposed to decide that?!?

Comprehensive immigration reform is needed NOW. As U.S. Citizens we have the right to pursue happiness, and for some of us that means living in peace with our families together. There are enough families separated due to divorce, we don't need a border to divide families. A family is an extinct species - and we need to fight to keep them together.

absolutly agree Laura our men have died for our freedoms in this country and i do believe we have the FREEDOM to fall in love with any one regardless of their citizenship. I think it is time people educate themselves on immigration reform and realize what a hardship it is on united states citezens, after all thats what we are so why not give us the same rights to pursue hapiness

Laura, thank you for your post.  My husband has a lifetime ban for entering the US illegaly and staying for more than 365 days then exiting US for a familiry emergency then re-entering for a second time.  We can submit a waiver for him in 2016, however we need to prove extreme hardship at that time in order for him to even have a shot at obtaining legal residence.  If we are lucky, my 4 year-old will be approx 14 when all is said and done.

I agree, create an Immigration system where families are allowed to immigrate within a "speedy and just" process (as the Bill of Rights guarantees protecting the rights of all citizens, residents and visitors on United States territory). Thus, immigrants can contribute sooner to the economy of the USA.

Well said, I am not sure that many people realize the hell that many of us go through. I can't count the number of times that someone has said to me "You're married? Why is the problem?" People have no idea what the immigration process is. I have been away from my husband for 2 years and we are still not so patiently waiting. Thank you for giving this EXTREME hardship a voice.

Thank you Laura.  You articulate the problem well and concisely.  This country needs immigration reform.  This country's greatness has been built on the foundation of friendly immigration policies for hard-working families who want to build a new life in a new land.  We as a people need to remember what made us the nation we are, even while we stay vigilant to protect our borders from opportunists and enemies.

Sorry but you also have to remember that part of where you live today was taken from latin america.
Oh well, I forgot, that happened years ago and it does not count. History shows that not everything is just and fair.
These foreign intruders as you call them are human beings who escape poverty and horror in their countries.
Would you not escape hunger and poverty if you had a chance to do so?
Yet, they suffer for years and years, working the dirtiest jobs, separated by their own families in fear of being caught anyday. These foreign intruders have american wives and children. There are these american spouses and children who wish for a reform and amnesty just like you do for the oposite. There are these foreign intruders whose only desire is to be with their spouses at no expense to legal immigrants. At the end, the good always prevails.
The change has come. I hope this change will keep families together and crumble the tide of anger, individualism and selfishness.

Thank you Laura.  I think it is so important that the myths about immigration law are corrected.  So many Americans would be open to change if they understood the strictness.  In reality, there is really not a "line" to get into once returning to your home country, especially if you have accumulated illegal presence.  I am fortunate enough that my father's family was allowed to immigrate simply because they desired to do so.  My husband was not so fortunate.

Thank u laura , i hope indeed that the new president will bring some change, my parents r american citizien and i am british citizen, i try many time 2 visit them and was refused. Due because i try 2 impersonate a us citizen 2o years ago and was in prison, all i wanted to be with my family, while there r murderes and robers and thief get there and well established. Which i cannot understand the logic in that thanks for some advice.

  49. We would have far fewer alien minors if we did not provide amnesties.
We would have far fewer alien minors if we prosecuted illegal employers.
We would have far fewer alien minors if we used E-verity.
We would have far fewer alien minors if we had a border we actually controlled.
We would have far fewer alien minors if we spent more time in other foreign countries pushing for "life, liberty & pursuit of happiness" for others.

Holding people accountable is part of being a responsible grown-up in this hard world.

    Once we enforce the law & can actually prove they work;
then i might be open to more humane issues.

Immigration reform is not the main priority right now..The economy derailed immigration reform.

DREAM act has no chance of passing under the current economic situation as more and more people are losing their jobs..How do you think unemployed people will take to the government effectively adding more potential employees to this economy (many with college degrees).

I personally I don't want DREAM or anything like that to pass right now. I know its sounds mean but whatever, it's not like just immigrants are suffering right now.
