Launch Global Resources Network
Launch a Global Resources Network to provide permanent access to resources for programs serving kids at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
Millions of programs work heroically to provide opportunities for children in need, but they lack high quality resources for the children they serve. The Global Resources Network (GRN) will be a powerful pipeline bringing a steady stream of essential resources and connectivity to these heroes. The GRN will be an online network reaching base of pyramid populations, eligible programs signing up to become part of the linked community. The GRN will align millions of programs, lowering cost barriers for highest quality and culturally appropriate materials, increasing purchasing power and improving cross-pollination of best practices and information.
The model works. First Book has proven this concept through the First Book Marketplace serving 5% of eligible US programs with educational resources. To be fully empowered, these programs need free and affordable access to more essential and enriching resources.
At full global scale, this entire disenfranchised and starving market will gain access to everything from books and art supplies to digital equipment and experienced advice.
This is a self-sustaining model that offers a paradigm-shifting opportunity to change the way we meet the needs of children in need. By aggregating base-of-pyramid purchasing power, expanding that buying power with donations from citizens (‘secondary stakeholders’), and adding a slim margin to the mission, the GRN becomes permanently self-sustaining - forever permanently improving the quality of programs serving kids in need.
Funding from the federal government would allow: technology for user friendly access; outreach to engage eligible programs; access to resources providers, secondary stakeholders.

Go First Book! What a better way to teach kids to read than to give them a sense of pride in ownership of BRAND NEW BOOKS! What greater desire can a kid have!

Wonderful organization, kids need access to reading resources.
Childrens interest in reading changes their world forever. It will
give them a chance for education where none may have been
possible.

My first and second graders were always excited to receive a book of their very own. Usually it was the first book that they ever owned. They would read it over and over. This was made possible because of First Book. Wonderful program!

There is nothing like a child having his or her own book to read to discover the world and themselves in the process.

Our Head Start and Even Start children and families are proud to have their own books thanks to First Book. Expanding this program is a great idea. Reading is a fun, family activity that breaks the cycle of illiteracy and poverty.

First Book is the Best! We're a St. Louis non-profit that provides toys and books to families in need during the holidays. All of the 3000 children we serve receive new books from us, donated through First Book. What a great way to make "play" educational, and provide new books to chlldren who often receive only hand-me downs.
Those who love to read, succeed!

We vote for FIRST BOOK and send a "Heartfelt" thanks to FIRST BOOK, their partners, organizers and volunteers who continuously give the "GIFT of READING". In 7 children's book distributions, 2002-2008, we have given books to over 118,000 children.
Words cannot express the look of excitement seen on the faces of the little children when they are given their very own book to keep. It is a treasure they will cherish and share.

First Book is one of the most important organizations in the world to help promote a better day for the global world; by getting books into the hands of children they can help teach the kids of the world how important it is to be literate and give them a base for whatever education their country does (or doesn't) provide.

Children need books in order to learn to read. It is as basic as ABC.
If you give a child a good book, the child will want to learn to read.
First Book has given 4 books this school year to each of the 400 children in our free to working parents after school program in Dallas, Texas. The value of owning books is evident in each child's attitude toward learning.

First Book is, or should be, a no-brainer. This is an organization dedicated to ensuring that no child in this country grows up without books. Reading is power. Simple as that.

To rid a society of illiteracy requires a team of consistent and dedicated people working for a common cause. FIRST BOOK is an organization that has proven to work. A vote of "yes" means a pathway being carved to help children less fortunate obtain new books to stimulate their minds and motivate their actions to want to read. It is a giant step forward in creating a generation of youth who thirst for knowledge and look for books to quinch that thirst.

I have been privileged to watch children's eyes light up when they receive their books and write their name on the book plate. They energetically work to sound out the words and describe the pictures, then hug the book to their chests as they leave the room to take "my book" home to show their family.

Books are posessions of pride for people who have nothing else of any worthwhile value to call their own, books are entertaining, educational and thought provoking for anyone, anywhere and can help to create changes for the better in any location. First Book is helping to create this change.

I have more than a few decades on me, and I can still remember MY first book (Dr. Seuss' "If I Ran the Zoo"). That book -- and all those that followed -- opened up a world of wonders, created a spirit of empathy, and enabled me to explore horizons far beyond my own small community. That's why I vote for FIRST BOOK, in the hopes that every child will be able to experience that same sense of wonder.

This excellent organization is able to bring together a corporation of leaders, many dedicated volunteers, and tens of thousands little children by promoting the idea that literacy can inspire us and make us free.

First Book is one of the best organizations for supporting and promoting literacy. It has a dedicated cadre of volunteers at the grass roots level that helps puts new books in the hands of children. I am a librarian in a K-6 school where 53% of the children are eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not a TITLE 1 school--that means we have all the needs and none of the resources that are available in other schools.
First Book has my Support!!!

A vote for FIRST BOOK is a vote to put Brand NEW books into the hands of children, who may not own a single book. Being able to read opens the world to children and gives them confidence to search for knowledge. "Those who read, succeed."

I cannot thank FIRST BOOK enough for the books they provided to students in Santa Ana CA last year! Every school library received a set of new books as well as almost every middle school student. The smiles on the students' faces were priceless. Keep up the good work FIRST BOOK!

If you cannot imagine your children's lives without the joy of reading books like FERDINAND THE BULL and THE WIZARD OF OZand CAT IN THE HAT, then vote for First Book to give childrenwho cannot afford those books the chance to read, to learn, topursue their dreams, and to educate and empower their children to do the same. Americans cannot go on ignoring the fact that so many of our young are growing up deprived of the ability to educate themselves.
