Peace of the Pie: Fund Human Needs Not War
This year Congress is expected to vote on the largest military budget in history, while President Obama will ask for an additional $33 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Already, the federal government spends over 50% of its budget on military operations and the Pentagon and this year Washington will be asking for even more. (See http://notmypriorities.org/ and/or http://www.truemajority.org/csba/priorities.php)
At a time when record numbers of Americans are without jobs, millions are without health insurance and even more under-insured; at a time when classroom sizes have ballooned and schools are underfunded, when home foreclosures continue to leave families out in the cold; and at a time when our environment and our economy are in need of a green revolution, it is abundantly clear our national priorities are in the hands of those who profit not those who need.
We call on President Obama to fund human needs not war by redirecting funds spent on military and weapons to life-affirming activities such as healthcare, education, and green jobs laying the foundation for lasting prosperity. There is enough pie for everyone to have a piece--so let's make 2010 the year peace gets a piece.
