National Campaign to Build More Trafficking Shelters

In light of the recent growth of awareness and practice of reporting human trafficking suspicion around the country (which has resulted in more rescues and arrests), I would like to see our government help fund a national media campaign to build more trafficking shelters around the United States. In addition, our government could also award some of our private, recognized service providers with funding for building and operating shelters for trafficking victims. Currently, there are only a couple of shelters solely dedicated to serving trafficking victims.

HL Mencken once said " The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe."

If we can provide anything for these victims - let it be safe houses! Let it be havens and oases where these men, women, and children can find mercy, justice, and most of all hope.

This is a great idea, Charles.  Really practical.  What's sad is that so many ideas posted here are not realistic.

With over 27 million people enslaved in our society, I believe this to be important enough for our new administration to address.

I heard President-Elect Barack Obama reference Matt 25 and state that his favorite verse in the Bible is v 40: "What you did to the least of these you did for me" (paraphrase).  I think providing Trafficking Shelters is an essential step towards not only rescuing and protecting these victims but also providing a safe means to begin restoring them back into society.  I would think that such an endeavor would provide President-Elect Barack Obama a welcomed opportunity to put into practice his favorite verse.

I think this is a great idea.  Human Trafficking is outpacing the drug trade because humans have a zero 'cost of goods sold' attached to them.  Sadly, I think this trend will continue unless we start to increase the punishment for these crimes.  I read of a Trafficker who received 8 months in jail for kidnapping a 14 year old girl and forcing her into the sex trade.

We need stronger laws to deter future traffickers and shelter for current victims.

There is an organization called SAGE (www.sagesf.org) that is working with the government to intercept victims and provide them with the help that they need. The founder, Norma Hoteling, has been featured on Oprah and is considered a pioneer in this area.  I hope the Obama administration looks to successful organizations like SAGE for ideas.

Great idea. Hope many people vote for this. After seeing the recent movie "Call and Response" my view on this whole issue has changed. We can make a difference.

There is no hope apart from safety and no freedom apart from both. We need to engineer our spending in such a way that no one inside our borders is used as a slave of any kind. Then move to deal with issues of human trafficking world wide, starting with our border countries to the north and south. Charles Less has a great idea and I agree with him. Bernie Federmann

Our nation's leaders once said, "bring me your tired and your weak...". There are none more tired and weak than the trafficked and victimized.  Let our nation be a place that shelters and rebuilds the lives that have all but been destroyed.

The issue of Modern Day Slavery is one of the great injustices of our life time.  Support Systems like safe houses for victims are a key part of the solution and should be a priorty of this new wave of abolitionist.

As a front line social worker in the Human Trafficking Movement this campaign has to happen. Just ask anyone that works in this field and they will tell you it is a MUST. Human Trafficking Victims have been stripped of their Human rights. If we could begin to create safety for these victims they can begin their healing journey. Funding needs to be not only for international victims but our domestic victims also. Our Country needs to rise above all other countries that are plagued with Human Trafficking and set an example!!
