• Invest in a More Stable World, Invest in Women

Empowering women and girls—beginning with a healthy pregnancy and safe childbirth—is the key to greater overall global health, self-sufficiency, economic growth and peaceful sustainability. Progress is being made to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of women and newborns around the world.  Yet every minute, a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth. By expanding proven strategies, we can accelerate progress so hundreds of thousands more women and newborns can lead healthy, empowering, inspiring lives.

Research shows that mothers play a vital role in the economic health of their families and communities. According to a 2001 report by USAID, an estimated$15.5 billion is lost each year in potential productivity when mothers and newborns die needlessly. On the other hand, when women survive childbirth, they are more likely send their children to school, get their children vaccinated and contribute to the peace and sustainability of their countries.  Their children are also up to ten times more likely to survive. Invest in a woman and you are investing in her family, her community, her nation and our world.

To accelerate progress, this issue demands US leadership.  With a UN Summit in September to review the progress made towards the 8 Millennium Development Goals to reduce extreme poverty, including reducing maternal mortality, this is the time for decisive action.  We call on President Obama to make a smart investment in global stability, starting with a commitment at the UN summit to increased resources for global maternal health and a robust strategy for saving the lives of women and babies in the Global Health Initiative, which is expected to be released through the US State Department later this year. In a time of tight budgets, investing in moms and babies pays.  Invest wisely, invest in women.

This has been a major concern of our charity too. We hope this will top the agenda. Unless the world decides empower women, the world will be producing more illierates and poverty striken people.

One incident coming to my mind is a story I read in an Indian newspaper which published an article about a pregneant women being pused out of the hospital for being poor, low caste and untouchable. She went out and gave birth to a child where nobody tried to help her and the baby and mother died undedr horrible circumstances. So, Education and Empowering women is the key for a civilized world.

My main concern is that pregnancy should be CHOSEN: effective contraception allied to FULLY-ACCESSIBLE, NON-JUDGMENTAL, abortion when required.  I would also maintain, however, that it should be the absolute right of every woman to experience a healthy pregnancy, whether chosen or not, followed by whatever help, and/or pain relief, is needed by each individual woman during labour.

I totally  agree with you ; acting for healthier pregnancies is only 1 part of the work that should be done. It can't  be separated  from contraception as we are speaking about a worldwide concern.

My idea is to educate men about women's rights. If the woman exerts herself and demand her rights and the man doesnot even understand what she is talikg about we as women will move at snail speed towards our goal. If men understand what women are talking about they will eventually  become our partners in the real sense.

I agree that we need to have men on our side in order to achieve progress faster. I think the best way we can proceed is to continually remind fathers of their parental responsibilities. Once men recognise that having children is their concern also, they may pay more attention to the many problems, including the serious health issues, which women encounter while fulfilling their role as reproducers.

Empowering the woman is empowering the nation and the world at large. Looking at the situation of Africa most of the low learneth are women and the least to be considered in any given condition. Educating the women remain the main backbone  behind building the world free of poverty since the women are there for their children, husbands and the family at large.

We need a worldwide grassroots movement for the women and girls of the world. A documentary to be called The Stories Women Tell is in the works with the help of the Packard  Foundation and others.  Please see www.lindaharrarproductions.com Evolution, is not enough. We need a revolution for women's education, health and human rights.

One very important way to invest in women is to value the unused womb.

By providing alternative opportunities for social status, self-actualization, and self- sufficiency other than motherhood, a woman truly has the freedom to choose.

If all childless women were given extra social security at the age of 50, no woman would ever need to choose motherhood as a rite of passage into adulthood or a means of social security. All children would be treasured gifts.

Childless women elders should be considered venerable in self-sacrifice rather than barren.

In Brazil, cattle ranchers are given money as a carbon offset to not burn more of the rain forest.

If they deserve a carbon offset, so do the world's childless women for not burdening the health, educational and welfare sectors of society with their unmanifest progeny and to ease the burdens of a lone survival-strategy in old age.

Safe motherhood is an important concept. I give you my vote for that.

I welcome you to look at my idea that would solve many social, economic and environmental problems through a holistic-systemic or holigent approach:

Holigent Revolution for Economic security, Peace and Sustainability

There are few fundamental options for reducing energy consumption to a sustainable level and energy independence. One is socioeconomic collapse – not a choice but a probable default scenario. The other is a transition to a hybrid socioeconomic operating system. Here is a revolutionary idea.

The Holigent REvolution proposes to redesign the way we live, work, commute, consume and govern ourselves to create economic security, peace and sustainability a community at a time by building a prototype mixed-use, live/work, low-carbon, mass-transit served compact Holigent Urban Village. This prototype development will facilitate and demonstrate the transition from suburban sprawl to vertical expansion, from car-dependent to car-free living, and from unsustainable capitalist consumerism to a sustainable hybrid socioeconomic operating system.

This hybrid system utilizes the best features of capitalism in tandem with direct human resource input that creates and retains local value and wealth significantly independent of general/global economic uncertainties.  Holigent communities will also prevent rather than fight crime by providing outreach, training and jobs for adjacent neighborhoods with special attention to their at-risk youth.  Beyond the demonstration Urban Village, we propose the development of Holigent Communities into regional and then national networks that would create a million or more construction-related and other jobs and leave a legacy of quality of life in secure, affordable and sustainable communities across America.  Learn more at www.holigent.org

If you like my idea I would welcome your vote at   http://bit.ly/97ARxB

    Hello all,

Please consider voting for my suggestion, which:

    * complements your/this suggestion

    * is in the Jobs & the Economy category

    * calls for "jobs stimulus" that subsidizes American consumers and producers of customized education, and American operators of associated online markets

    * draws on the work of top learning scientists, growth economists, innovation scholars, research organizations, etc.

    * if acted on, will do A LOT of good for children

Womens rights to fair pay, hours and promotion are essential to the health and wellbeing of a family.  Unfair, illegal practices, low pay, inadequate pension and holiday provisions and no possibility of promotion after gaining extra qualifications, experience, education is unacceptable.

Women's only role is not bearing and raising children. Women are more important than men in many ways. While women are increasingly becoming key players in economy, they hold full responsibility for keeping the family together and happy. Women should be given full and equal respect; indeed they deserve more than equal respect in the society. However, each culture and society have their values, which must also be repsected and incorporated into women's empowerment. Dr. Farid Midhet

Women are not dying of conditions we cannot treat, they are dying because society does not consider them worth treating. We have to educate and empower women, but equally, we must educate men to believe that women are not the problem, they are the solution. Governments are now waking up to the fact that we are two thirds of the way to 2015, when the MDGs have to be met. If they could just realise that if they resourced MDG 5, many of the other MDGs would be met, e.g. getting and keeping children in school reducing infant & child mortality, reducing poverty.. so much would happen if we just keep the mothers alive. We are doing our bit www.hopeforgracekodindo.org

Safe motherhood should not be looked at as simply a woman's issue but rather as a human rights issue and development issue. Men are major stakeholders in improving safe motherhood since they are major decision makers in the home, community and nation. Male involvement is very critical if we are to reduce the high maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Sub - Saharan Africa.

    Dear All,

We welcome the strategy & approach of Invest in Women very much and this is the need of the present prevailing situation. If the ladies are empowered in the house, the entire family becomes strengthened and as an effect, the community, nation and world at a large become progress.

At last in India we have recognized the importance of women and making the bill to empower the women and providing the opportunity to play their role in decision making for the better communit/nation. We wish all the countries in the world should recognize the women power & ability and provide them an opportunity to perform their role.

Our vote is with White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood and totally agrees that, world health depends on women. On behalf of our indigenous people as an organization we appeal to the Obama administration that it is time to Invest in Women.

Once again we appreciate the efforts of White Ribbon Alliance for the better world and we wish good luck.

Severe psychiatric disorders during and afer pregnancy are the single most frequent serious complications of  pregnancy.  There are over 800,000 new case a year in the United Sates alone. If untreated these diseases do not merely damge the mother, but her newborn, her intimate realtionships, and her other children. The second leading cause of medical morbidity worldwide is depression in women. Less than 15% of women ever get help. Two of the most inportant reasons are the stigma of mental illness and intmese feelings of guilt and shame.

The good news is that early derpession screening and treatment identifies and cures over 90% of cases. This has been demonstrated by a program begun at the National Naval Medical Center in Behtesda Maryland, and which has gone on to become the standard of care throughout the United States Military.

The Family Mental Health Institute in Washington helps health care organizations and sysem to implement programs in whcih every women who is pregnant or is a new mother gets screened for depression. These have included the Healthy Start Intitative, the Healthy Family Iniatives of the Burea of Maternal and Dhild Care of the Depatment of Health and Human Services.  The Eastern Shore of Maryland, a rural area and the inner city of Washington DC. These programs are simple, effective, and inexpensive

The primary goal is to reduce infant mortality. At the same time it prevents maternal mortality from suicide and homicide or the other untreated complications of pregnancy, such as diabetes and hyperension.

Over 25 % of unwed teenage  mothers enrolled in programs to improve their lives cannot benefit from them because of severe depression.

That there is a medical epidemic 20 times as prevalent as AIDs that goes almost unknown is a manifestation an underlying profound negative attitude towards women. Whjile appeals on the behalf of mothers do not work, citing the fact that it saves babies does.
