Take out candy machines and junk food options from schools. They should have stricter requirements for what constitutes a vegtable, standards for additives fat, sugar, and whole grains. Also, it would be nice to be able to offer some fresh fruit and vegtables instead of canned. Offer nutrition education and teach people how to cook again. So many people in our society are obese because not only do they not exercise but they live on fast food and convenince foods instead of fresh foods.

I suggest that there be established a horticulture program for public schools located where organic farming is possible. The food produced can supply the cafeteria, and extra produce (such as during summer months) can be sold through a farmer's market, providing affordable, local foods to the community.

Obviously this plan really needs to be developed- perhaps for northern climates, produce can be frozen and preserved healthfully and economically for use after the growing season, for example.  Perhaps excess foods can be distributed to needy families during the school year instead of being sold.

The bottom line is, children will eat healthfully, they will learn farming skills that will help them maintain health independently when they are adults.

I think schools should offer vegan diet meals for those who are vegans.  It's healthy and not to mention important to our enviorment.  Animals play a big role in our circle of life and deserve to live just like us.  They have minds and souls just as we do and bottom line it's only fair for those who don't eat meat to have the option of what they wanna eat in school or for people who are interested in becoming one.

Do you know a vegetarian high school teacher?  Encourage him/her to sponsor a vegetarian club at school.  Young people who are considering the switch to a no meat diet need support and information to choose wisely and to feel empowered ethically and health-wise. It is an easy and fertile venue in which to spread the message.  Many students choose an aspect of animal rights for their senior exit project. Our VegEM's group has been covered in the school newspaper and has all the respect and involvement as the other clubs on campus.  We used club funds to leaflet during recruitment week and sponsored Vegetarian Times subscription gifts to the school library, cafeteria, and culinary department. We welcome other ideas.

We are in a change period of our lives and we must consider better food  in our school. Vegatarian or better yet vegan foods for our children.  What better place to teach children about better foods than at school.

Vegan diets are known to be disease-preventing and beneficial to who chooses to follow a vegan diet. Meat (both red AND white) contains way more cholesterol and fat than vegetarian and vegan foods. Obese kids and teens are headed for heart attacks if they continue to eat these foods due to both the fat and cholesterol contained in such foods.

PE should also be mandatory for the entire country, and students should have to take it for many more days a week than they do. Children and adolescents need AT LEAST 30 minutes of exercise per day, but many of them rarely get the chance to exercise at all outside of school. If students had it at least 3-4 times a week, surely child and teen obesity would significantly drop.

PLEASE, instead of following the traditional, meaty, high-cholesterol way of life many Americans have chosen, research and change your path for both you and your children. Many people are ignorant to the fact that traditional is usually not the best.
