I think getting our OWN house in order will go a LONG way in providing opportunities for other countries to trade with us.
What we need to export are our ideas that work for us. What we need to import are ideas that work for others. I suggest we build a M.R.F.

on every landfill and put people to work sorting the GARBAGE that will be with us always. Then we build E-waste
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETNaO2Pa8q4centers possibly right next door to the M.R.F. We use these sorted products to make the things we need and stop digging into the earth for new supplies.
Then we show this "technology" to our neighbors and let them build their own. Mexico has plenty of Garbage and they could put their people to work if they built M.R.F.'s
What we could import is UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE.

Imports must equal exports. None of this upside down equation where the USA produces nothing to export.

When negotiating NAFTA, CAFTA, etc. be sure to include the voices of the labor unions and sustainable agricultural communities, not just the business owners and agribusiness. Look for deals that are win/win for workers and consumers in both countries, not just in ours and not just for business owners. Renegotiate the IMF's Structural Adjustments in Mexico and Central America that cut social spending (health, education) and governmental agricultural subsidies. Level the playing field by withdrawing agricultural subsidies in the US and prohibiting the dumping of corn at below cost of production. Forgive debt of developing counties.

Consumers need to start seeking and demanding American made products. We need to celebrate Made in USA! We need a commitment from every US manufacturer that they will at least review the other social factors such as putting Americans out of work when they send production and now services oversees.
Can we add tariffs - yes. But the grass roots is always where we need to start. The dollar is the biggest vote. The consumer needs to speak up.
I would gladly pay even double for an American made product if my neighbors could have a job, the environment was protected and workers treated fairly. As a virtual manufacturer it is troubling how difficult it is to have products made here in the US, yet overseas are ready, willing and affordable. I have personally struggled with this issue for each and every product we offer. I will continue to try to manufacture here in the States but is very costly and oftentimes simply impossible.
This is a great website for helping change the consiousness of America. Thank you very much!

Add an FICA (social security) tax to imports to rebuild the social security fund which loses funds for jobs lost because of imports.
