This is a LARGE task. Citizens have looked the other way for far too long.
We need a voting system (machines etc) that can be trusted.
We need more access by diverse political parties (DEMs, and REPs keep the requirements high to prevent us from shaking up the boat)
We need a level playing field for campaigning (Otherwise only the Rich can participate)
We need a level playing field for debates (If our first ammendment is Freedom of speech, how is it that a person that has been nominated cannot particpate in all debates?)
We need CONGRESSIONAL reform (Lobbyists have taken over the country. Something must be done to prevent ANY money from exchanging hands amongst politicians. That to me is the same as INSIDER TRADING)
There's probably more.. but we can start with this. Some clever person needs to draft a bill.(Another deterent of the citizen from participating)
Read Naomi Wolf's "GIVE ME LIBERTY" and then let's take back our country.

What will correct all of those conditions is for the nation to become a constitutional nation for the first time. If you read Amendment 12 of the constitution you will find that there is the possibility of fifty different presidential nominees and fifty vice presidential nominees for every presidential election. When we recognize it does not allow each state to nominate one nominee for each of the two parties for the possibility of 100 national nominees for president and vice each per election, it is obvious the party system is not constitutional and should be abolished.
Having the party system is the major cause of our nation being in the condition it is. Each elected official or nominated Justice for the three sections of government are concerned about the wishes of their perspective party and not the people in general. In most cases, the leaders of the parties are people with large amounts of money to their disposal and set up party agendas to protect their money at all cost.
It is virtually impossible for a low financial, working to make ends meet, person to enter any position of leadership to provide stability, equality and unity of the people in the governing positions. To do so would equalize the spread of the nation's wealth. Therefore, requiring the government to live up to the Declaration of Independence and Constitution is required to get this nation stabilized for all citizens.
Making those constitutional changes while giving the citizens a say in how their congressman votes on every decision they make for the nation, or state, eliminates each of the above needs. A general outline on how to achieve it is located at http://prop1.org/protest/elijah/democracy.htm, with most of the details worked out in my head.

Open Source with paper trail is simply self-evidently necessary. So is Vote-By-Mail with no need for excuses. Between those two things, we should be able to actually allow most people to vote and --What a Novel Idea! -- have their votes count.
Caucuses are simply evil -- they leave out all those folks who are housebound or bedbound. No ride helps these folks. Every 8th phone call I made of thousands into Caucus States got me someone who could not participate without an Absentee Ballot -- which caucuses don't allow. It's an odious hidden scandal.
Honest machines with paper trails and Vote-By-Mail and we'll be nearing the democratic dream of actually letting everyone vote and be counted.
I'm grateful to Open Voting Consortium for the tireless work they put in to actually get open source a reality.

In California, we should lead the country by taking control of system certification, and keep the corporation controlled fed testers out of the process- Let's let our great Secretary of State know we want transparency via open source / paper ballot printing systems as demonstrated by the OVC !
