President Obama: Let Single-Payer In!

On Thursday, March 5, 2009, the White House will host a summit on how to reform the healthcare system.

The 120 invited guests include lobbyists for various interest groups including the private-for-profit insurance industry (AHIP), some members of Congress including Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus who has already ruled single payer “off the table,” and various others concerned with healthcare.

Thanks to your many calls and emails over the past two days, Rep. Conyers has been invited to attend!

But 1 single-payer supporter in a sea of 120 private insurance lobbyists and supporters isn't enough. We need adequate representation at this (and future) summits which properly reflects America's depth of support for single-payer healthcare.

Tell President Obama that 1 single-payer supporter in the White House Summit on healthcare is not enough. We want all the people who Rep. Conyers asked to attend be allowed a seat at the table.

I Want More Single-Payer Support at Healthcare Summit

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for inviting Rep. Conyers to your healthcare summit on March 5, 2009. However, one voice for single-payer is not enough. We need adequate representation at this (and future) summits, which properly reflects America’s depth of support for single-payer healthcare.
Recent polling shows a super-majority of Americans want a national healthcare system. Both you and your Secretary of Health and Human Services have publicly stated support for single-payer healthcare. Single-payer healthcare is the solution to what ails us.

I welcomed your promise to clean-up Washington. The healthcare corporations have made billions of dollars for their CEOs and stockholders at the expense of ordinary working Americans for years, and they have used that money to make generous contributions to candidates and office-holders.

You have a strong ally in Rep. John Conyers, the leading proponent of single-payer healthcare in Congress. Thank you for inviting him to attend the March 5 meeting. But we need more single-payer support at the table for this, and future, healthcare summits.

"With the falling economy, you would get more bang for your buck with single-payer. Businesses would see their expenses going down. Unions, with health care off the table, would be empower to negotiate contracts on issues that really matter to them in terms of their work. And the government would increase its leverage with liability coverage for doctors and costs for pharmaceuticals."
