The HSUS Animal Rescue Team has been very busy the past two weeks responding to devastating flooding in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dozens of team members and NDART volunteers were sent to the affected area to oversee emergency animal shelters and perform water and land rescues.
When the rescuers first arrived in Iowa, the area was submerged in toxic floodwaters. Thousands of people were forced from their homes and thousands of animals were left behind to fend for themselves. The rescuers responded to urgent rescue requests on both land and water and were able to help over 1,000 animals in just two weeks.
Although it was an exhausting mission, it was a great success. It was very rewarding for the rescuers to save and return pets to their anxious owners. As many as 50 people per day went to the emergency shelter to be reunited with their missing pets. I would like to share one rescue story in particular, as told by one of our rescuers.
--We responded to a call about two cats that were trapped in a flooded
house without food or water for more than a week. When we entered the
house we waded through water-soaked debris looking for the cats. My
heart sank when I saw a cat's immobile body lying at the top of the
stairs. I went to touch him and was shocked when he responded. He was
extremely lethargic and dehydrated and would not have lived more than
a few hours. We transported him along with another critical cat found
at the residence immediately to the emergency shelter. Both cats were
revived before shelter staff contacted their grateful guardian with
the good news.--
