Horse Drawn Carriage Cruelty
Published February 18, 2009 @ 02:31PM PT
Horse drawn carriages are often seen as a romantic throw back from the past. However, times have changed. Horse drawn carriage rides are frequently offered in crowded cities. A horse's day in the NYC consists of dodging reckless car drivers, stress, and exhaustion. If these horses survive the traffic, which sometimes they do not, they return to their cramped stalls with no room to lie down or enough bedding to rest. Contrary to popular belief, they do not live in a quaint stable in the park, but in city warehouses. There are laws limiting the hours a horse can work a day, but they are often ignored.
These horses work year round in 100 degree summers, and 20 degree winters, with no protection. Does this industry sound romantic? Paris, London, Beijing, and several cities in the US have decided it's unacceptable, and banned horse drawn carriage rides because of animal welfare issues. There is no need for horses in NYC, as there is extensive public transportation. Save a horse and walk instead!
