  2. Gwbodmowqdxkjiw-200x148-cropped More Than 500 Dogs Rescued from Texas Puppy Mill

    Published August 18, 2009 @ 10:36AM PT

The HSUS in conjunction with the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake and the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, rescued more than 500 dogs and approximately 15 cats from deplorable conditions at a Kaufman County puppy mill.  When rescuers arrived at the property, they encountered a disturbing scene. The dogs are mainly small breeds such as poodles and Chihuahuas. These neglected animals were housed in filthy conditions and exposed to the harsh elements all year round. Many of the dogs are severely matted and suffering from chronic infected wounds, internal and external parasites and serious skin and eye infections. It is obvious that many of these animals had never known life outside their wire cages. All of the animals are being swiftly removed and transported to a nearby emerg... Read More

    Published March 24, 2009 @ 02:02PM PT

Nearly 400 neglected dogs were rescued today from a Logan County puppy mill. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) was asked to help by local law enforcement in preparation for this large-scale raid. The dogs were found living in horrific conditions in dilapidated structures throughout the 82-acre property. Members of The HSUS' Animal Rescue Team and the Humane Society of Missouri removed approximately 350 dogs, 17 miniature ponies, six cats and several exotic birds and turtles from the property. When rescuers arrived at the property, they encountered a disturbing scene. The dogs, ranging from Shih Tzus and Poodles to Akitas and Shelties, were suffering from serious medical ailments and housed in filthy conditions. Many of the dogs were severely matted and suffering from untr... Read More

  4. Gaaylgkivqetljt-200x148-cropped Confirmation: 1st baby seal killed this morning! Please help.

    Published March 23, 2009 @ 02:51PM PT

It began at 5:48 Eastern time.  Check out the photo [WARNING: This is graphic!] The sealers stormed into the once-peaceful seal nursery with their hakapiks raised. Within a matter of seconds, defenseless baby seals were clubbed and their blood spilled onto the ice. This year the Canadian government will allow commercial sealers to slaughter 280,000 seals for their fur. The European Union will consider banning its trade in seal products in a few weeks. But the fishing industry and the Canadian government are lobbying furiously to fight the ban. That's why it's crucial that we're here now, so we can broadcast the truth to the countries in the European Union and ask them to help us bring these atrocities to an end. Please help sustain our work on the ice -- togeth... Read More

  5. Rshutnllgshjuaf-200x148-cropped Case Finally Closed on "Downers" Loophole

    Published March 16, 2009 @ 11:24AM PT

Saturday, The HSUS expressed thanks to President Barack Obama for personally announcing a ban on slaughtering downed cattle - those unable even to stand or walk - in the United States. The closing of the loophole improves the welfare of animals and strengthens the safety of our nation's food supply. The announcement comes within the first 50 days of the new administration, and more than a year after The HSUS released undercover video revealing the abuse of dairy cows at a Chino, Calif. slaughter plant - where sick and crippled animals were grossly mistreated in attempts to get them into the food system. The investigation led to the largest meat recall in U.S. history, riots in South Korea over American beef imports and eight congressional hearings. View the tim... Read More

  6. Yjlezbsygxfylih-200x148-cropped Speak Out For Chimps!

    Published March 05, 2009 @ 12:10PM PT

Last night, ABC News: Nightline broke the story of more than 300 chimpanzees languishing at one of the world's largest primate research facilities. The report featured video footage gathered by The HSUS during a nine-month undercover investigation at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana -- and showed the routine and possibly unlawful treatment of hundreds of chimpanzees and monkeys. Each animal's suffering detailed in the report was wrenching, but the story of 26 elder chimps currently warehoused at the facility was particularly moving. Watch our undercover video and see for yourself. These 26 chimps were taken from their mothers in the wild, and have since lived a life behind bars. The oldest, Karen, was captured in 1958, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was still president. Can yo... Read More

  8. Rtfqxvfmkbgyede-200x148-cropped Horse Drawn Carriage Cruelty

    Published February 18, 2009 @ 02:31PM PT

Horse drawn carriages are often seen as a romantic throw back from the past. However, times have changed. Horse drawn carriage rides are frequently offered in crowded cities. A horse's day in the NYC consists of dodging reckless car drivers, stress, and exhaustion. If these horses survive the traffic, which sometimes they do not, they return to their cramped stalls with no room to lie down or enough bedding to rest. Contrary to popular belief, they do not live in a quaint stable in the park, but in city warehouses. There are laws limiting the hours a horse can work a day, but they are often ignored. These horses work year round in 100 degree summers, and 20 degree winters, with no protection. Does this industry sound romantic? Paris, London, Beijing, and several cities in the US have ... 9. Spkfnglsbmwmhof-200x148-cropped Fuzzy Labels

    Published February 18, 2009 @ 01:26PM PT

An HSUS undercover investigation reveals that some of New York's largest and most exclusive department stores are duping their customers. That's right, Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue have all been selling unlabeled fur-trimmed garments in violation of New York state law (gasp!).  The law requires that all apparel with real or fake fur be labeled as real or fake, so that shoppers can have access to important product information. Despite the law which has been in effect for over a year, entire racks of jackets trimmed with animal furs were found at these stores without any labeling information regarding the origins of the furs.  So if these stores aren't labeling their garments properly, how is anyone supposed to make informed decisions about what they a... 10. Oevvbnibaiocblx-200x148-cropped North Carolina Puppy Mill Raid—300 rescued

    Published February 18, 2009 @ 01:17PM PT

The HSUS partnered with Wayne County Animal Control last week to bring an end to the suffering of 300 neglected dogs in a Wayne County puppy mill. When rescuers arrived at the property they were greeted by a gruesome scene. The dogs, mainly Lhasa Apsos, Shih-Tzus and Chihuahuas, were suffering from serious medical ailments and housed in filthy conditions. Many of the dogs were emaciated, had untreated lacerations, severely matted fur and serious skin and eye infections.  They were being housed in unheated cages inside unventilated barns and outhouses. It was obvious that many of these animals had never known life outside their wire cages. The HSUS and Wayne County Animal Control were joined on this operation by volunteers from United Animal Nations, who are overseeing the temporar... Read More
