History
HEAR US started in July 2005 to address a widespread need: to raise awareness about homeless children and youth.
This unconventional advocacy approach centered around giving homeless kids the opportunity to tell their stories.
In order to do this, HEAR US founder Diane Nilan took a trip...and the chronicle of that ongoing trip provides a fascinating look at the history of HEAR US.
Look at Homelessness
Diane shares her observations about homelessness in a provocative blog.
News coverage about homelessness, especially as experienced by children, youth and families, tends to be sparse. Some news coverage tells a story, especially the behind-the-scenes explanation. HEAR US looks at some national news and offers analysis.
Awareness Raising Tools from HEAR US
HEAR US offers videos and books to increase awareness about homelessness.
Understanding homelessness leads to a compassion epidemic.
It's About the Children
Determined to raise awareness about homeless children, Pat Van Doren started "It's About the Children" as an avenue to promote her poignant photographs and her acclaimed children's books on homelessness.
Pat has written 3 books: Where Can I Build My Volcano? (winner of NAEHCY Outstanding Media award), A Family of 5 or 6, and A Place of Our Own.
IATC is now part of HEAR US, with Pat as a member of the board of directors.
