Mission
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need.
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, HFHI retains complete control over the use and distribution of donated funds in furtherance of its mission.
Programs
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates -- independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area -- fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and nurturing, house construction and mortgage servicing.
Habitat for Humanity's new Cars for HomesTM vehicle donation program provides another way in which individuals can contribute to the local and global mission of Habitat while potentially qualifying for a tax deduction. In particular, net proceeds generated from donated cars, trucks, boats, RVs, motorcycles or other vehicles through this program are used by local affiliates and Habitat for Humanity International to build homes with low-income families within the community and throughout the world. Donors can indicate interest in donating vehicles by calling the Cars for HomesTM toll free telephone number, 1-877-277-HFHI (4344), or by visiting http://www.carsforhomes.org
