Mission: We are committed to thoughtfully and lovingly making a significant difference in the lives of the exotic birds left in our care. Vision: UMWAR is the first nonprofit exotic bird sanctuary in Sussex County NJ. It is with this initiative that this organization will not only remain, but become the largest exotic birds sanctuary in the surrounding counties and perhaps even in theState of New Jersey. Our vision is achievable and it is all due to all members of the organization who have contributed their labor, time, moneys, compassion, love and devotion in assuring the safety and well being of all the exotic birds in our sanctuary and the numerous ones to come. For the exotic birds who are unadoptable or rehabilitating from abuse and neglect. We aim to create a community of volunteers that have a love for animals and get involved in a most rewarding experience and work in making a difference in their life. Goals: To achieve this mission and fulfill our vision, we have outlined our goals and strategy. Each involves activities that involve our community, and in unity safeguard the lives of the birds. *Add an Assistant Director, Exotic Bird Care to our staff *Secure a full staff of skilled bird-care volunteers *Develop and build outdoor free-flight aviaries for the birds for the warm months *Develop and build an indoor free-flight habitat for the birds *Conduct on-site classes to educate the general public about important issues of avian welfare including the need for responsible exotic bird ownership *Conduct classes or off-site visits to educate breeders and/or retail pet shop owners about responsible sales techniques *Reach a minimal financial-support membership of 1000 Strategy in order to achieve our goals Expand our exposure via media to promote adoption, education, and fund-raising to help us cover the cost of the birds’ care and small projects to benefit them Interact with other reputFable animal-welfare organizations with the aim of establishing a mutually beneficial support network that can help its members with redistribution of birds from over-populatedrescues, adoption/placement of birds, fund-raising, etc. Encourage other organizations to act in accordance with UMWAR’ principles/practices, extending aid to local animal control and animal welfare agencies and facilities to actively safeguard exotic birds and other animals from harm. Objective: Our main objective is to apply the majority of funds raised directly to the birds’ needs (eg. food, veterinary care, retrainingand/or rehabilitation, cages, toys for their mental stimulation, necessities for the physically challenged birds’ comfort), with the remaining portion to be used to offset the cost of such items as utilities, heat, office supplies, media messages, etc . Funding: We are not funded by Government or State, and are supported solely by your voluntary contributions. We pride ourselves in taking the best care possible of the many exotic birds brought to us. We are the only registered refuge in our immediate area and count on receiving your help and support to continue enabling us to provide these gentle creatures with the love and attention they so desperately need and have often been denied. Our needs are immense and every penny counts. Your help with a one-time gift (or if more convenient, a monthly or yearly pledge) can make an important difference for us. Such financial support is vital for us to continue providing a healthy diet, proper veterinary care, mental stimulation, supplies, equipment, and a clean healthy environment for our birds, which now number over 130. Our present list of needs gives only a small glimpse into the reality of running a facility that provides care for the many birds left with us, often as an alternative to placing them in unsuitable or uncaring homes or shelters.
