Millennium Promise Alliance

Launched in September 2005, Millennium Promise's mission is to end extreme poverty by 2025. In support of this goal, Millennium Promise's unique focus is to promote and coordinate action by individuals, governments, corporations and non-governmental organizations to address the underlying conditions of extreme poverty. Our work is largely guided by the Millennium Development Goals (the 'MDGs'), eight globally endorsed objectives aimed at eradicating the multidimensional sources of poverty. Our flagship initiative, the Millennium Villages project, applies scientific research, economic analysis and international development expertise to the practical achievement of these goals at the community level. Over one billion people live in extreme poverty. Surviving on less than $1 a day, they are malnourished, plagued by disease, lack safe drinking water and sanitation, and are unable to provide education for their children. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), agreed to by every UN member country, set time-bound and measurable targets for eliminating all facets of extreme poverty by 2025. Sub-Saharan Africa is currently at the greatest risk of not achieving the Goals, and is struggling to progress on almost every dimension of poverty. And while many who live within these countries are struggling to survive, they are capable of improving their situations with the right support?and are determined to do so.
