The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia is a non-profit organization, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. It was founded in 1983 - celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2008 - and serves 57 counties in western, central and northeastern Pennsylvania and 23 counties in southern West Virginia with headquarters in Pittsburgh and regional offices in Erie, Pottsville, Wilkes-Barre, Punxsutawney, and York, PA, and Charleston, WV. In fiscal year 2009 (which ended on 8/31/09) the Foundation fulfilled 705 wishes with the help of more than 950 volunteers. The Foundation is the first chapter to fulfill 700+ wishes in one year and has fulfilled more than 11,000 wishes. The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 1980 in Phoenix, AZ, and is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 65 chapters in the United States and its territories and more than 35 international affiliates spanning 5 continents. Through private donations and the efforts of more than 25,000 creative wish-granting volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 185,000 wishes around the world since its inception.
