HOME''s mission is to ensure equal access to housing for all people. This means full access to the American dream and the rights every American is guaranteed: the freedom to pursue wealth and the opportunity wealth brings; and freedom from discrimination. This long-term goal of a just society can only be achieved by empowering individuals and families, challenging housing discrimination, and eliminating the legal, social and economic barriers that limit achievement and opportunity. HOME has identified seven steps necessary to achieve its mission:
Eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in homeownershipEliminate housing discrimination and unfair practicesDecrease concentrations of povertyLower the rate of mortgage defaultWork to de-segregate housing patternsHelp more people become homeownersIncrease the availability of affordable housing HOME''s Center for Housing Education helps people gain the knowledge and financial skills they need to become successful homeowners and tenants. It concentrates on financial literacy, homeownership, and foreclosure prevention, and administers financial assistance for first-time homebuyers.
HOME''s Center for Housing Advocacy ensures housing choice by identifying and challenging housing discrimination. it helps victims of discrimination fight for their rights, and challenges the status quo by investigating systemic discrimination that perpetuates an underclass. It educates consumers about their rights, and trains the industry about their responsibilities. The Center for Housing Leadership addresses the larger barriers that hold people back: lack of opportunity resulting from an old way of doing business. Using data from its many clients, research, and persuasive argument, CHL changes laws and policies. One of its many successes is the Trust in Lending Act, which made mortgage brokers responsible to their clients, an outgrowth of HOME''s observation of the causes of many of the foreclosures its clients were facing.
