Horse Play is a non-profit organization that operates an equine rescue/sanctuary in Saunderstown, RI. We've been in operation since 1999 and have helped more than 240 horses. Our equine sanctuary provides rescue and rehabilitation for abused, neglected, unwanted, and/or slaughter-bound horses. Many horses come to Horse Play because their owners can no longer afford to keep them, children outgrow or lose interest in them, some owners do not have the skills or knowledge to provide proper care and many horses are just considered “disposable” Most of these horses also have health and/or behavior problems.
Horse Play is committed to improving the lives of abused, neglected horses or unwanted through the use of kind, compassionate humans. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses which otherwise would go to slaughter. We also provide educational materials and programs for anyone interested in horse care, training, etc.We use humane, communication-oriented “teaching” methods in our training/retraining, provide quality vet care, feed and lots of love. Some horses are eventually placed in approved adoptive homes. Those horses who are “unplaceable” live out their lives at the Sanctuary. Many of the horses participate in programs for students, inner city youth, and pet-assisted therapy as well as our clinics and workshops demonstrating our training/teaching methods. In 2007, more than 100,000 horses were slaughtered and the meat sold overseas. This is a tragic end for an animal who so willingly serves us. Horse Play provides an alternative.
It is our intent:
To provide rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary services for abused, neglected, and/or unwanted horses.
To provide placement & follow-up services for rehabilitated horses and permanent sanctuary for horses that cannot be placed.
To increase public awareness through community outreach.
To develop and present educational programs and printed media, clinics and seminars on the responsible care and training of horses.
We depend entirely on the public for support.
