Conservation Fisheries

Conservation Fisheries, Inc. was incorporated in 1992, but the initial work which led to its formation began in 1986 when the directors were graduate students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This pilot project-- the propagation and reintroduction of two rare fish species to reestablish extirpated populations-- has been carried forward continuously to the present. CFI now propagates numerous rare fishes with the goal of restoring populations that have been eliminated because of pollution or habitat destruction. The company monitors the status of populations of rare fishes in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia. Non-invasive monitoring techniques, such as direct observations with mask and snorkel or binoculars, are often used to prevent mortality and minimize impacts on rare species.
