Bonobo Conservation Initiative

2701 Connecticut Ave Nw #702
Washington, DC 20008

The Bonobo Conservation Initiative was founded to address the extreme crisis facing bonobos, humankind''s closest great ape relatives. Distinguished by their peaceful, "make love, not war" society and extraordinary intelligence, bonobos are struggling for survival in the wake of war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the only country where they are found. Highly endangered, they inhabit the heart of the world''s second largest rainforest. BCI?s mission is to promote conservation of the bonobo and its tropical rainforest habitat. We are working with indigenous communities, Congolese and international partners to implement innovative conservation strategies and to raise global awareness about bonobos. To this end, BCI works to foster a conservation and environmental ethic in the US and worldwide to promote participation in programs and awareness of issues concerning rainforests, endangered species, global climate change, watersheds, indigenous rights and community development issues.
