BETTER DETROIT YOUTH MOVEMENT

The Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM) is a volunteer-based 501c3 organization consisting of many individuals and groups who are committed to working with our communities, parents and students to improve the quality of life and learning for every child in our city.

The BDYM supports the successes of students and youth at large, and the many community youth resources in our community who want to impact their quality of learning and life.  By better engaging, connecting and promoting our city's existing youth programs, groups, agencies, foundations and educators, we can all help to strengthen their outreach and bring a higher quality of service to more children, more often.

We believe to teach a child, it's important to reach a child.  By discussing with our children and teens what their needs are, we can better assist in understanding how we can help them succeed, and make them a part of the process in progress.  Student involvement and peer-to-peer mentoring programs are key aspects of this initiative.

The BDYM hosts a variety of live events that rally our communities, actively engage youth, and not only entertain, but educate participants and audience alike.  Some of these events include forums, panel discussions, fundraisers and workshops.  In each community these events are held, we enlist the support of residents and business owners in moving forward our mission to better progress our children.

One of our most promising initiatives is FAME (fashion, art, music & education).  Introduced at "The Live In Peace Art Party", this program uses the power and beauty of the arts to rally our community, and engage our children in productive, positive activities that the arts provide to encourage critical thinking and foster higher levels of discipline.  FAME is now being developed as an after-school program for Detroit high school students.

The BDYM is currently developing a database to support individuals and groups entrusted to improve the quality of life for Detroit youth.  This project will result in a comprehensive resource guide that provides our children and teens a variety of youth services, programs and solution providers.

We believe it is necessary to apply a heightened sense of urgency that is vital to change the course and condition of Detroit's young generation. And we are calling upon every citizen in our city to work with us in achieving definable actions that help to enrich our children's communities.

All of us in and around our city have a vested interest in improving the quality of life and learning for today's young generation.  And if we all actively participate in arriving at better ways to better our children, we can and will build a brighter city and future for every Detroit child.
