AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps is a year-long program in which people in their 20s live out and deepen their commitments to Jewish life and social justice through service, study, and community building. Founded in New York City in 1998, AVODAH recently expanded, opening its fourth site in New Orleans. AVODAH Corps members come from across the United States and Canada and from every sector of Jewish life engage in direct, full-time work on urban poverty issues such as hunger, literacy, and domestic violence. To give context and meaning to this work, corps members participate in two evening sessions each week with local teachers and activists. Participants live together during their year of service, forming close bonds between young people committed to social change and Jewish life and to the premise that integrating these two areas is a powerful way to transform their own lives while making a difference in the lives of others.
AVODAH is not affiliated with any particular Jewish denomination or movement. Participants from all across the range of Jewish life are encouraged to apply. Applicants to AVODAH must be 21 years of age or older.
