Many artists struggle with the day-to-day tasks involved in running a business. Founded in 1984, the Arts Business Institute has created seminars that break down the sometimes-overwhelming tasks, such as accounting, booth design and photographing work, into clear manageable processes.
The Arts Business Institute partners with art nonprofits, business development centers and art education organizations across the US and Canada (sometimes abroad) to host small business development workshops. ABI's curriculum offers courses on marketing, wholesaling, retailing, booth design, pricing and product design.
ABI distinguishes itself by offering seminars facilitated by nationally recognized artists, arts marketers and galleries. Each course is designed to instill successful business practices in artists. This allows artists to see what strategies work for each unique medium and artist. The orgaization continues to mentor artists after workshops with newsletters, webinars and other special networking events.
This organization is extremely efficient with donations. Over the past 15 years, 86% of the staff and overhead expense has been covered by the founder. The result is that 90 cents out of every dollar donated goes directly into programming! Other past and present major donors/sponsors include the National Endowment for the Arts, Appalachian Regional Commission, The Rosen Group, Niche and AmericanStyle magazines.
