The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is the volunteer-focused private nonprofit organization dedicated to preservation, management, and promotion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T. or Trail) as a primitive setting for outdoor recreation (on foot) and education. The 2,179-mile long footpath traverses the Appalachian highlands from Maine to Georgia and hosts approximately four million annual visitors. ATC oversees a complex cooperative management structure involving 30 affiliated Trail maintaining clubs, more than 80 federal and state land management agencies, and numerous other non-governmental organizations.
