Even though American Indian people have made significant socioeconomic advances over the past decade, they still face significant financial hardship. More than 51 percent of American Indians living on reservations lives below the poverty line. Real median household income of reservation families is a little more than half the U.S. level. Further, the total unmet financial need for American Indian students is more than $50 million per year.

By providing scholarships for American Indian students at the nation''s 32 tribal colleges and universities, the American Indian College Fund (Fund) provides opportunity and access to post-secondary education. While the Fund has had success by providing approximately 5,000 scholarships annually to tribal college students, we are only meeting 15 percent of students'' unmet need.
