Timberland Takes First Steps, But Needs to Put its Foot Down Once and For All!
-
Published July 27, 2009 @ 12:06PM PT
Responding to concerns that its demand for leather is fueling deforestation of the Amazon and contributing to climate change, Timberland has taken a major step toward protecting the Amazon rainforest today. While the company’s announcement of a new policy is a positive and welcome step, Timberland needs to put its foot down and tell Bertin, one of Timberland’s leather suppliers and one of the dirtiest companies in Brazil, that it will no longer purchase leather made from Amazon destruction, period. Bertin supports the deforestation and burning of the Amazon to graze cattle. According to our report, “Slaughtering the Amazon,” that’s not all that’s wrong with Bertin: Greenpeace has identified hundreds of ranches within the Amazon rainforest supplying ... Read More

Nike Establishes Policy to Protect the Amazon!!! Current mood: ecstatic Hey Friends! Great news: today, Nike announced a new policy that ensures the leather used in Nike shoes will not contribute to global warming caused by Amazon deforestation! The Greenpeace report “Slaughtering the Amazon” released just last month was the culmination of a three-year investigation that tracked beef, leather and other cattle products from ranches involved in deforestation at the heart of the Amazon rainforest, as well as the invasion of indigenous lands and slavery, back to the supply chains of top brands like Adidas, Reebok and Timberland. Every eight seconds, an acre of Amazon rainforest is destroyed for Brazilian cattle ranching, which is the biggest single ... Read More

What's MY Story?
-
Published May 06, 2009 @ 01:32PM PT
Hi Friends, As an online organizing intern for Greenpeace, I feel that it is essential to stop the effects of Global Warming as soon as possible. But this feeling didn't come out of thin air. A lot of my life has been spent as an avid supporter of the environment, from the days where I'd watch Captain Planet religiously to today, where I work helping people like you make a difference. That's why I want to share my story with you. Check out more stories and share your own on greenpeace.org! Growing up in suburban Michigan, in a city where everybody knows someone who has worked - and been laid off - by the big auto companies, global warming was not brought up too often. While people in and around my city literally made their living off of machines that spewed gargantuan ... Read More

Share Your Story!

Hi Friends, We all have unique stories about why we joined the movement to stop global warming. Here at Greenpeace, we want to know why each and every one of you decided to pitch in and why you care. After all, these stories ultimately give the movement its strength. Share your story today! Recently. Californian Representative Henry Waxman has introduced a bill that, for the first time, seriously addresses global warming. Even though it's a strong first step, there are some big problems with it that need to be fixed. Lobbyists and PR people from the coal, gas, and oil industries will be doing everything in their power to make the bill as weak as possible. It's going to take every one of us must work together to beat the fossil fuel industries. You can help out by letting your... Read More

Polar Bear Petition Delivered!
-
Published April 24, 2009 @ 12:46PM PT
Hi Friends, On Earth Day, April 22, our Global Warming Campaigner Ryan Patterson paid a visit to Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar to spread the importance of alleviating the pressure global warming puts on the endangered polar bear. Towards the end of the Bush administration, the polar bear was added to the list of Endangered Species. However, in the few months before his exit, the administration exempted them from assessment when it comes to federal activities that emit greenhouse gases, further endangering the polar bear whose habitat is slowly melting from global warming. "This is similar to being admitted to the hospital, only to be told that you won't be receiving treatment!" Ryan says. So, Ryan headed to the Department of the Interior (the DOI) with two polar bears and some... Read More

Can You Imagine A Clean Energy Future?
-
Published April 22, 2009 @ 01:39PM PT
Hi Friends! For all of us here at Greenpeace, every day is Earth Day. And I'd guess that's true for you, too. But, for a lot of folks, this is the one day each year that they really think about the serious environmental challenges facing our planet. So we thought we'd take the opportunity to send a message. Imagine Wind Power! Today, our activists took to the streets of Chicago and transformed a Michigan Avenue bridge into a bold statement about the future. The message was pretty simple: Imagine clean energy now. It made for a compelling image -- one that won't soon be forgotten by the people who saw it. It was so good in fact, that we thought it would make the perfect e-card for you to send to your friends and family this Earth Day. TAKE ACTION: Sign our petition and send the e-c... Read More

Save the Polar Bears!
-
Published April 10, 2009 @ 01:02PM PT
Hi Friends, Time is running out for the polar bears! Unfortunately for the bears, global warming is eating away much of their arctic habitat and, as a result, many are literally starving to death. To add insult to injury, shortly before leaving office, former president Bush issued two regulations that specifically bans federal agencies from protecting the polar bear from greenhouse gas emissions! President Obama has recently granted Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar until May 9 to reverse these regulations! It’s not too late, tell Secretary Salazar that you want to save the polar bear!. In addition to ignoring the plight of the polar bear, the regulations under review also limits the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from necessary independence as well as exempt all greenh... Read More
