Buy Local Food Once a Week
Support your local farmers by purchasing one food item every week from a local farm. Here is how you will be helping:
Protecting Local Economies: Large agribusinesses have not only driven nearly 5 million farms out of business since 1935, but also led to a consolidation of food supply. With the money no longer staying in town, local economy becomes weaker and a source of local jobs is lost. Furthermore, consumers will no longer have the option of buying nutritional and rich food.
Environment: The distance between grocery stores and farms that supply their produce amounts to 1500 miles on average. As a result, food transportation requires a substantial amount of fossil fuel consumption and plastic packaging to maintain its freshness.
This is an ongoing pledge that should be fulfilled as often as possible.

I buy Fresh foods every Thursday from a Local market that sets up downtown in FL. The fruits & vegetables are so pretty & good. This is a Wonderful idea. I wish the whole world would do this.

I only buy food once every two or three MONTHS but buy local as much as possible, which is mostly just local eggs when they are available ...
Unfortunately, there is no such thing as local Taos flours, rice, barley, cooking oil, nuts, dried beans, certain herbs/spices, bananas, dried shitakes ... which is about all I buy ...
Most of the herbs, herb teas, fruits and vegies that I eat I grow myself ...
I have been BOYCOTTING CORPORATE AND PROCESSED AND PACKAGED foods for many years now ...
and DO NOT BUY IMPORTED foods almost at all anymore ... only foods grown in the USA except for cashews twice a year.
Also, I am boycotting anything that comes in plastic containers since we have no plastic recycling here (besides being apparently dangerous I am hearing).
I suggest to everyone that it would be VERY EASY TO GET RID OF FACTORY FARMING and processed foods and corporate foods ...
BOYCOTT THEM ACROSS THE BOARD ... If we all became 90% vegetarians, factory farms would be out of biz within a year or less.
IT IS UP TO US, ESP SINCE "OUR" GOV HAS BEEN BOUGHT ... BUT WE ARE PAYING FOR IT NONETHELESS.
Don't JUST boohoo/holler about it ... DO SOMETHING about it ... it is easy, healthy and very economical.
THEY CANNOT "FOIE GRAS" ALL OF US!!!!

Pledge fulfilled Jun 06!
I live in the Village of Ranchos, New Mexico, and every Saturday we have a farmers market with local farmers bringing their produce. We also have local artisans and musicians participating. It's great!

I try to go to my local farmers markets at least once a week. The produce is fresh and great, plus I'm all for supporting local farmers, as well as artisans.

My family of 5 - Anant (Baba/Dad), Vatsala (Aai/Mum), Vinod, Geetanjali and Akshay - buy our vegetables from the local farmers ALL the time. I realize this is important. I respect these small farmers for their resilience and their hard work in surviving against difficult odds.

The local farmers are stewards of our environment. It is great to be able to buy food at the local farmers markets and small stores that stock local goods knowing who my money is going to and what is going to be done with it.
