DIAN FOSSEY GORILLA FUND

Mission

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. We are committed to promoting continued research on their threatened ecosystems and education about their relevance to the world in which we live. In collaboration with government agencies and other international partners, we also provide assistance to local communities through education, training and economic development initiatives.

Programs

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is committed to gorilla protection, science, field research, education and awareness, and economic development. Our activities take place on many levels and in many places, with people from Rwanda, the United States and around the world. Some of our most important activities include the following:

1. Monitoring and protecting the mountain gorillas residing in Rwanda's Parc National des Volcans, through the Karisoke Research Center's programs, including tracking and anti-poaching patrols.
2. Conducting conservation action and outreach programs in other parts of the region. Sharing our knowledge and experience to promote the use of common gorilla monitoring protocols and practices.
3. Collecting demographic, behavioral and environmental data, often in collaboration with major universities in Africa.
4. Funding small-scale development activities in communities near the gorilla habitat, in support of the local people. Training rangers and trackers. Bringing Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing technologies to collaborating universities in Africa.
5. Training students and trackers in applying these powerful land-use planning technologies. Promoting public awareness of gorilla conservation.

History

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is a not-for-profit organization founded by Dr. Dian Fossey in 1978 to preserve and protect the world's last mountain gorillas. Originally named “Digit Fund” in memory of Dr. Fossey's favorite gorilla, the Fund was renamed in 1992 to underscore its commitment to carry on the gorilla protection and research programs established by Dr. Fossey.
