GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis: Action for Access
At a glance: The Action for Access campaign is working towards our fundraising goal of $5,000, which will be used towards developing the infrastructure for a healthy clinic in Iganga, Uganda.
Key Fact: Only 5% of the youth have access to proper care and STI treatment in Uganda.
Partner Info: Uganda Development and Health Associates (UDHA) is a non-governmental organization formed by Ugandan professionals to address the health and related developmental problems faced by the Ugandan population, in order to secure their future. The mission of UDHA is to “engage a multi-sectoral and professional approach with strong community participation and ownership for the enhancement of health and development of communities.” Key among UDHA’s goals is to contribute to the reduction in the incidence of and increased awareness of HIV/AIDS among the youth (the most productive age group); and to promote adolescent reproductive health and give hope to the already affected. If you would like more information about our partner, please visit them at udha.net.
Project/impact: The Iganga Youth Care Centre will be the first of its kind to provide a safe haven for those who need it most. Having a sickness yet unable to receive treatment due to implied negative connotation is inexcusable in today’s world. With the help of outdoor and indoor activities, dances, dramas, and the feeling of a home away from home, youths can feel comfortable coming for testing, getting treatment, and learning preventative measures. It is important to have youth feel that a clinic/center is not something medically negative but a relaxed place to get help if needed.
Chapter history: This is GlobeMed at WashU's first year running. One of our chapter's co-presidents worked with UDHA throughout the summer and planted the seeds for what is now growing into a close partnership between us. We hope to continue our work together and further our relationship with UDHA as our chapter grows and develops.
