GlobeMed at University of Missouri-Kansas City: Strengthening a Mother's Hope
At a Glance: GlobeMed, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, has recently teamed up with Truman State University to fund their partnership with Maison de Naissance, a birthing home in Haiti. Their goal is to fund a market clinic that will provide impoverished families with more access to health care, reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, and offer postnatal and preventive care for infants and their families.
Key Facts: Eighty percent of Haiti's population lives below the poverty line. As of 2008, about 62 of infant deaths have occurred occur per 1,000 live births. Moreover, Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the western hemisphere.
Our Partner: Maison de Naissance, translated as a "house of birth," is a maternity center which provides women a safe and hospitable atmosphere in addition to the medical services of a modern maternity clinic. Maison de Naissance reaches the impoverished communities of Haiti and provides "family planning, prenatal and postnatal education, obstetrical care, newborn medical care, social services and spiritual support." Our Impact: With the recent partnership with Maison de Naissance, GlobeMed at UMKC is currently attempting to fund a market clinic for the maternity center. This market clinic provides a two room tent equipped with exam chairs, tables, a waiting area, vaccination supplies, exam supplies and medical record filing supplies. The estimated cost for this market clinic is $2,500. GlobeMed at UMKC has begun various fundraising events, and it hopes to provide Maison de Naissance with a market clinic by the end of this academic year. By providing market clinics to rural communities, Maison de Naissance provides the means to defy poverty's restrictions and, furthermore, it offers hope to Haitian families and their future.
