Global Village School

Mission

Educating for a Better World One Person at a Time.
Our mission is to provide students around the world with a quality education that promotes peace, understanding, and respect; supports them in truly being themselves; encourages them to follow their dreams; and helps them to become wise and capable stewards of the planet and each other.

Programs

Global Village School offers a progressive, accredited, customizable K-12 homeschool diploma program via online and text-based curriculum, complete with individualized teacher services. Our courses integrate peace, justice, and diversity studies with the core subjects. We are an international school; we welcome students from around the globe.
Our approach is creative and flexible. (We love to work with “unschoolers.”) We believe that students learn best when they are fully engaged in their studies. We encourage self-directed learning rather than trying to make everyone study in the same way. We customize curriculum based on student interests, needs, and learning styles.

HIGH SCHOOL – we offer a full high school diploma program that includes:
Core Courses - English, social studies, science, math, foreign language, fine arts, computers, etc. Peace and diversity themes woven throughout the courses provide an integrated picture of the world.
Peace and Diversity Studies - Each year students select from courses such as Human Rights, The History of Civil Rights in the U.S. (ethnic and religious; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and women's issues; etc.), The Peacemakers, Global Spirituality and Activism, Literature of Diversity, Planetary  Stewardship, The Buddhist Path to Peace, GLBT Literature, etc.
Service Learning - Students research what is going on in their communities and in the world, and choose where to volunteer their services.
Electives - The possibilities are infinite. Students can choose from Global Village courses, courses in their local communities, or creative projects of their own.

KINDERGARTEN – 8TH GRADE

Families choose between a complete package or a fully customized curriculum. The completely packaged curriculum option provides all the books and syllabi needed for a year of study.  With a learning styles-centered approach and concentration in diversity and developmental stages, our elementary program focuses on engaging the whole child. The other option is to have curriculum that is fully customized to meet the individual needs, interests, and learning style of the student. A list of recommended materials, (books, CD-ROMs, videos, etc.), and information on how to order them will be provided to you.

History

Deep concerns about intolerance, violence and inequality in the world led to the creation of Global Village School in 1999.  At that time we had an expansive vision, a small personal savings account, and no outside funding. Several years later Global Village is a vibrant community with students of all ages, exceptional staff, and a full K-12 curriculum. We have come a long way, relying on a lot of volunteer effort (especially in the early years) and our own personal contacts for fundraising.  We are impacting the lives of our students in positive, long-lasting ways and we touch the lives as of everyone that visits our resources website seeking information on progressive organizations, alternative media sources, books, and current events.

How Global Village School Works

Our standard school year runs from September to June. However, students can enroll at any time of the year, and can continue working through the summer if they wish. Students are free to choose from online or text-based courses. Most people prefer to take some of each. Each year-long course is divided into thirty-six lessons. Semester-long courses are eighteen lessons. Students access their online lessons from our password-protected Web site. Text-based courses are accompanied by a written study guide. Students are assigned a teacher for each course. They can correspond with their teachers via phone, mail, e-mail, or in person if they live locally. Teachers are available to answer questions from students or parents. Students are free to work at their own pace and to collaborate with their teachers in customizing the curriculum to match their unique  interests and needs. Our program is designed to be completed in four years. Students who wish to accelerate their progress are free to do so.
