Mission
The Global Fund for Women is an international grantmaking foundation that supports groups working to advance the human rights of women and girls. We work in partnership with groups addressing issues that include but are not limited to: Building Peace & Ending Gender-Based Violence; Advancing Health and Sexual & Reproductive Rights; Expanding Civic & Political Participation; Ensuring Economic & Environmental Justice; Increasing Access to Education; and Fostering Social Change Philanthropy. Since its inception in 1987, the Global Fund has granted over $61 million to more than 3,500 women’s groups in 167 countries.
Programs
The majority of our funding is devoted to our general grantmaking program. We support groups working on issues such as the advancement of women in political life, ending violence against women, reproductive health and choice, and improved access to media and communications for women's voices. These grants provide general support to organizations- allowing women to make their own decisions about how to use the funds. We also provide targeted support for groups doing innovative work that falls within the rubric of several strategic initiatives. Economic Opportunity grants empower women by helping them achieve economic self-sufficiency. Our Girls' Education Initiative invests in the long-term benefits that result from educating girls. Women's Funds grants support the development of indigenous philanthropy. Our initiative on Women's Rights Within Religious and Cultural Tradition supports efforts to eliminate traditional practices harmful to women and girls while empowering women within their own religious or cultural context.
