SUPPORTING CIVILIAN PROTECTION IN DARFUR
The relentless attacks carried out against innocent civilians by the government of Sudan and its proxy militia — the Janjaweed — have displaced over two and a half million Darfurians. They have been forced into refugee camps, outside of which armed groups prowl, waiting to assault and rape women and children when they leave the camps to collect firewood.
As the political process in Darfur drags on, the violence continues. As world leaders argue over the appropriate nature of their response, rape is being used as a weapon of genocide in Darfur.
The need for protection from assault while collecting firewood is fundamentally a peacekeeping problem. Diplomatic efforts to deploy a robust UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur continue. However, at present, the African Union mission in Sudan (AMIS) — with 7,000 troops on the ground — is the only force in Darfur charged with protecting civilians. GI-Net’s civilian protection program, implemented with our local partner in Darfur, assists AMIS with the vital task of conducting firewood patrols. We work in North Darfur, where AMIS is present but where such patrols are not occurring. Our project works closely with displaced women and girls, community leaders, and AMIS to coordinate and oversee these patrols.
YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT CIVILIAN PROTECTION ON THE GROUND IN DARFUR!
GI-Net members and contributors from across the United States and the world have donated over $250,000 to protect civilians in Darfur through our civilian protection program. These anti-genocide activists have asserted that they are willing to take out their wallets in order to protect those civilians in Darfur who have been subject to violent murder, rape, and displacement since the beginning of the genocide.
