  1. BBC: China violating arms embargo on Sudan

    Published July 17, 2008 @ 07:08AM PT

An investigation by BBC program Panorama has found evidence of recent shipments of Chinese arms and military vehicles to Sudan in violation of a UN arms embargo. Two Chinese-made troop transport vehicles and an anti-aircraft weapon were recovered by rebels in Darfur helping the reporters with their investigation. One of the vehicles has been linked with an attack on the town of Sirba in West Darfur where it was reported to have fired its mounted anti-aircraft weapon directly into homes. Both vehicles are known to be part of a shipment the UN had traced going into Sudan, but that had disappeared soon after entering the country. The entire shipment had come straight from a Chinese factory and was consigned directly to the Sudanese military. The export of arms from UN member states to Sudan h... Read More

    Published June 17, 2008 @ 05:57AM PT

The Security Council Report update on Darfur/Sudan is now available. Recent developments highlighted in the report include ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Campo stating that his office had found “no trace of Sudanese proceedings in relation to crimes in Darfur during the last three years.” He also mentioned that the Sudanese government is not complying with resolution 1593 and evidence “shows an organized campaign by Sudanese officials to attack civilians, with the objective of physically and mentally destroying entire communities.” Costa Rica drafted a presidential statement that, among other assertions, called on Sudan to arrest and surrender indictees Ali Kushayb and Ahmad Haroun to the ICC. Other member countries of the Council --including Belgium, South A... Read More

  6. Government of Sudan Issues Response to Presidential Candidates

    Published June 04, 2008 @ 06:16AM PT

A recent response by the Government of Sudan (GoS) to the recent joint statement by the presidential candidates on Darfur is typical of the GoS’ attempts to deflect attention from its culpability in Darfur. Reacting to the statement “We Stand United on Sudan” from presidential candidates Clinton, McCain, and Obama regarding Darfur and the CPA, the response makes unsubstantiated, narrow-minded attacks on Save Darfur, the presidential candidates, and rebel groups in Darfur. In its press release, the GoS attempts to rebut the candidates' statement that,  “There can be no doubt that the Sudanese government is chiefly responsible for the violence and is able to end it.” Their response alleges that impartial observers have identified re...
