Mission
The Fuel Fund of Maryland, Inc. supplements the resources of low-income families who are experiencing hardship with their household heating and utility needs.
Programs
The Fuel Fund provides emergency assistance to families who cannot pay their gas, electric or oil bills. The Fuel Fund also provides assistance with wood, kerosene and propane when needed. The Fuel Fund helps low-income families and seniors and people with disabilities living on a fixed income. In 25 years, the Fuel Fund has raised over $10 million to help more than 100,000 families.
The Fuel Fund also advocates for legislation that benefits low-income families, such as raising the minimum wage and educates Marylanders on the negative consequences of energy poverty in the state.
Energy Conservation Education
Watt Watchers is an energy conservation education initiative started by the Fuel Fund in 2007. Its objectives include:
learning how to read, understand and lower your utility bill; understanding why your bill can differ greatly from your neighbors'; learning how to make energy efficiency efforts a family project; and beginning to understand how to manage your finances by creating goals and starting a budget.
Volunteers are needed to serve as instructors for groups of adult students enrolled in classes. Watt Watchers typically requires a weekly commitment of approximately 2 hours for a 5-week period, but we will work around scheduling conflicts with any interested parties. All volunteers will receive training from the Fuel Fund prior to leading classes. To learn more about Watt Watchers or any other volunteer opportunities, please contact Danielle Phelps, volunteer coordinator, at 410-821-3022, ext. 106 or dphelps@fuelfundmaryland.org
