Mission
Friends of the Sea Otter is dedicated to the protection of sea otters and their habitat throughout their North Pacific Range with emphasis on the Southern Sea Otter, a rare and threatened species found along the California coast. By supplying information, coordinating protection efforts, providing education and fostering advocacy, FSO, founded in 1968, maintains its position as the world's oldest organization dedicated to sea otter preservation.
Programs
Educate the public at local events and via the world wide web. Make presentations to school groups and community organizations. Provide teachers with educational materials for lessonplans and reserach projects. Respond to requests for specific information about otters. Works with other organizations to establish coordination of efforts and policy such as education and environmental working groups for Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Alternative Fishing Gear Task Force, Hazardous Materials Ocean Spill Response Group, Endangered Species Act (ESA) Coalition, Monterey County Tourism Task Force and Dept. of Fish and Game Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Center. Reviews government documents concerning the sea otter and its habitat; provides comment; solicits response from membership as needed.
