Mission
Our Mission: To improve the health, hygiene, education, comfort, and well-being of disadvantaged Zambian children.
How do we achieve this?
-The Flip Flop Foundation provides basic necessities, including footwear, clothing, food, school supplies, health & hygiene supplies, mosquito nets, sporting equipment, and toys.
-The Flip Flop Foundation supports organizations that educate and enrich the community through dance, drama, and team sportsmanship.
-The Flip Flop Foundation aids in the provision of skills training for children and young adults.
Programs
The Flip Flop Foundation currently supports 36 organizations (orphanages, community schools, hospices, and community-based organizations), primarily in Lusaka. The organization also runs a Sisters & Brothers Program which provides an ongoing friendship / exchange of communication between Zambian and American children.
History
The Flip Flop Foundation was founded in 2006 as a partnership between Zambians & Americans concerned about the many Zambian children who lack shoes and other basic necessities essential for health, hygiene, education, and comfort. The organization was founded by Shira Rohde who initially traveled to Zambia to work on an HIV/AIDS project for six months in 2006. Initially, she purchased flip flops at local markets, and distributed them randomly to children in need. Seeing the need for a sustainable solution, she founded the Flip Flop Foundation. In the years since, the Flip Flop Foundation has expanded to provide clothing, food, school supplies, health & hygiene supplies, mosquito nets, sporting equipment and toys. The Flip Flop Foundation also supports community education, team sportsmanship, and skills training.
