Mission
To promote the elimination of hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while
encouraging self-sufficiency through advocacy and education.
Programs
St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance collects and distributes food to more than 500 partner agencies in 13 of Arizona's 15 counties. Agencies receive food in the form of non-perishable items, produce, dairy and meat to provide congregate meals or stock a food pantry. A few of the Food Bank's programs include:
*Emergency Food and Baby Boxes: Provides nutrition and nourishment for those facing a crisis situation.
*Food Value Club: Allows an individual or family to stretch their grocery dollar. The public may purchase a box filled with quality food, such as meat, pasta, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables, purchased by the Food Bank.
*Community Kitchen: Breaks the cycle of poverty. A 15-week foodservice training course for low-income adults to learn the culinary craft and skills for life.
*Kids Cafe: Makes nutritions meals and nutrition education available to children in low-income communities while they attend an after-school or summer program.
*Hunger 101: Teaches children and adults about hunger and poverty while enagaging them to take community action and create solutions.
History
Founded in 1967 by John van Hengel, the Food Bank was based on a simple concept: some people are hungry while others have an abundance of food. Donated food from the community is collected by the Food Bank and distributed through a network of social service agencies. The agencies receiving this food serve tens of thousands of men, women and children every day through congregate meals or food boxes.
