Automatic Section 8 Vouchers for SSI Recipients

Automatic Section 8 Vouchers for SSI Recipients

The Issue

SSI payments have not kept pace with the cost of basic human needs. In 2008, the national average income of a person with a disability receiving SSI was $668 per month or $8,016 annually – equal to only 18.6 percent of the national median income for a one person household. That level of income was almost 30 percent below the 2008 federal poverty level of $10,400 for an individual.

With incomes at 18.6 percent of median, SSI recipients are one of the lowest-income groups eligible for federal housing assistance.

Public Housing Authorities typically only occasionally open their waiting lists for Section 8 and Public Housing Vouchers, and those waiting lists usually take years.  That leaves most SSI recipients homeless or near homeless, when we should be providing their every basic human need! HUD needs to Coordinate with Social Security to automatically send out Section 8 Vouchers to SSI recipients, so we can ensure that our most vulnerable citizens do not end up homeless, needlessly institutionalized, or dead.

Rachel NesmithPetition StarterI have severe narcolepsy: all the symptoms, and can't drive or work. I also have Fibromyalgia, RA, and Diabetes type 2. When my narcolepsy onset: EDS in 2000, REM auxiliary symptoms exploded the WEEK of 9-11, somehow the psychological trauma helped my Narcolepsy SP, HH, and Cataplexy onset with horrible severity. I get "hit" with this overwhelming feeling of sleepiness...Cataplexy is triggered in me with laughter, anger, surprise, fear, empathizing with a fictional/real character/situation, and fighting sleepiness.
