Terms & Privacy Policy Update

December 2014

Since we last updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, the way people use has evolved and the platform has grown exponentially.

Today, more than 80 million people use to start and sign hundreds of thousands of petitions. Every week, over 100 petitions on become victories that are astounding catalysts of change.

We want to ensure our policies enable the people who use our platform to create even more change in the future. To that end, we're making some key updates to our policies that we'd like to share with you. Our new Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy will take effect on 12 January 2015 and we’ve put together this page so you can understand the main changes.

Our new policies are still focused on ensuring our users can create the change they want to see. Here are a few core things we're not changing:

  • is free and open. You can use our platform to start, sign and share petitions on issues you care about regardless of who you are, or what you believe.

  • We won’t pass your email address to third parties without your permission. Organizations can pay to promote their petitions (that's what keeps the platform free to use), but we'll never share your email address with those organizations unless you say it's okay.

And here are some things we’ve updated:

  • We’ve made it easier to resolve issues. We removed our arbitration clause, which means we would work through the courts if you had a major disagreement with us. We've also simplified how we would work together to resolve a dispute like that first.

  • We’ve made it clear that you retain full ownership of the content that you own and upload to We’ve also clarified that while you own the content, we might modify or share versions of it. As an example, if we want to feature your petition on our homepage, we might shorten the title.

  • We explain more clearly how we use cookies. We use cookies to operate our platform and provide you with the most relevant content. We'll also be able to understand whether you've continued your involvement with organizations you’ve connected with after signing a petition.

  • We’ve cut down the legal jargon. We’ve done our very best to get rid of complex legal terms to make these policies as clear as possible, because we want you to understand what they say.

You can read the new Terms of Service here and Privacy Policy here, and view the old Terms of Service here and Privacy Policy here. If you have any questions about these updates, feel free to contact us -- we'd love to help.

Thanks for supporting change in your community - we can't wait to see what you'll change next.
