Climate Change Affects Food Security, Take Serious Action Now!
The Issue
The negative consequences of climate change are already having a serious impact on farmers in Hamilton and southern Ontario. The United Nations warns that climate change “will make natural disasters more frequent and intense, land and water more scarce and difficult to access, and increases in productivity even harder to achieve.” Our elected representatives at all levels of government must urgently cut greenhouse gas emissions, preserve agricultural lands, and support our farmers by ending all subsidies of the oil, coal and gas sector; imposing a moratorium on tar sands exploitation; increasing local food processing capacity; and ending all urban sprawl (such as the Aerotropolis) onto foodlands.
