Mission
The Drug Policy Alliance Network (DPA Network) works to broaden the public debate on drug policy and to promote realistic alternatives to the war on drugs.
We envision a just society in which the use and regulation of drugs are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights, and in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more.
Programs
The guiding principle of DPA Network is harm reduction, an alternative approach to drug policy and treatment that focuses on minimizing the adverse effects of both drug use and drug policies themselves.
We are deeply involved in educating the public, policymakers and the press about issues ranging from marijuana regulation and youth drug education to illicit drug addiction; the spread of infectious diseases; policing drug markets; and alternatives to incarceration.
DPA Network programs include our Office of Legal Affairs, Office of National Affairs, State Organizing and Policy Project, New Mexico Drug Policy Project, New Jersey Drug Policy Project, California Drug Policy Project, DC Metro Area Drug Policy Project as well as our media and website. We also work internationally on drug policy issues and sponsor a national bi-annual conference.
History
DPA formed in 2000 when The Lindesmith Center, an activist drug policy think-tank established by Ethan Nadelmann in 1994, merged with the Drug Policy Foundation, a membership and grantmaking organization established in 1987. The objective of the merger was to create a powerful organization to promote drug policy reform in mainstream public and political discourse.
Today, we have seven offices, 45 staff, 35,000 dues-paying members, over 50,000 online subscribers and a growing track record of success at the local, state and federal levels.
